Research Paid Social Media Advertising

What intrigued me about paid advertising on social media was how seamlessly it integrates with typical social media posts, making it more akin to traditional advertising methods than any other form of media do. As a result of this integration, it is quite common to see advertisements that are directly placed within popular platforms such as Instagram, TikTok, Facebook, and Snapchat. Generally speaking, the only thing that distinguishes these advertisements from other social media posts is their labeling as "sponsored" or "ad" and the fact that brands have paid to place these advertisements with the specific goal of reaching targeted audiences according to their interests, age, geographic area, and the manner in which they engage with other users on these platforms.

Nike is one of the best examples of using paid social media advertising for product promotion by using video-based advertisements on Instagram. Every advertisement features professional athletes displaying their athletic prowess while wearing the latest styles of Nike shoes. The advertisements utilize visual imagery that is visually striking and conveys strong emotional messages. Therefore, both the visual images as well as the emotional messages are extremely effective in encouraging the viewer to purchase apparel from Nike.

The examples are numerous with regards to fast food brands such as McDonald's advertising their current menu items & limited time offers on TikTok. These types of campaigns can be successful utilizing TikTok's fast paced & attention grabbing style utilizing quick & humorous videos; but are only successful if your ad has enough impact within the first few seconds, else users will continue scrolling past it. However, if executed well, they could receive an enormous amount of views & go viral.

I also saw that ads on social media from brands Shein/Zara have a real-life setting of the influencer/model in an outfit they would typically wear. This makes the clothing seem much more accessible and fashionable for people to visualize themselves in. The "Shop Now" feature allows them to go directly from the advertisement to a purchase without additional steps.

In the end, paid advertisement on social media is effective due to target market characteristics, engaging visuals, and ease of interaction. The more successful advertisement blends in with the platform while also catching the viewer's attention quickly. However, not every advertisement will be the same effectiveness; therefore, if an advertisement appears out of place in the application, people won't pay attention to it. I believe that the main aspect of paid advertisements is finding that balance of being natural but also leaving no doubt on what the advertisement is selling/promoting.
